DIN7985 Pan Head Screws

DIN 7985 Pan Head Screws feature a raised, rounded head with a cross recess that provides convenient screwdriver access while leaving a compact fastening profile above the workpiece. The head shape offers a practical balance between bearing surface and overall height, making these screws suitable for general machine assembly and components where a conventional hexagonal head is unnecessary.

The screws are available with Type H (Phillips) or Type Z (Pozidriv) cross recesses, allowing the drive style to be matched with the preferred installation tools. Metric thread sizes can be supplied in different lengths, materials, strength classes, and surface finishes according to the application. Their compact head and cross-drive design make DIN 7985 screws suitable for machine components, sheet-metal parts, electrical enclosures, equipment panels, brackets, covers, and general mechanical assemblies where easy installation and a neat finished appearance are required.

Specification:

DIN 7985 Pan Head Screws are manufactured with a raised rounded head and cross recess, with the original DIN specification covering metric sizes from M1.6 to M10. The cross recess is available in Type H (Phillips) and Type Z (Pozidriv) configurations. DIN 7985 has been superseded by DIN EN ISO 7045, so the applicable dimensional specification should be confirmed when a replacement ISO version is required. (dinmedia.de) The screws use ISO metric threads, normally with an external thread tolerance of 6g. Steel versions can be supplied in common property classes such as 4.8, 8.8, and 10.9, with mechanical properties according to the applicable fastener material standard. Stainless steel versions are available in A2 and A4 grades according to the relevant stainless-steel fastener requirements.

Dimension Chart of DIN7985 Pan Head Screws:

Selecting a DIN 7985 screw is not only a matter of matching the thread diameter and length. The head diameter, head height, cross-recess size, and recess depth also determine how the screw sits on the component and whether the selected driver can engage the recess correctly. The dimension chart includes the main thread and head dimensions for each size, together with the corresponding Type H or Type Z recess information. This allows customers to check the screw against the available installation space and select the appropriate drive configuration before ordering. DIN 7985 covers the former German specification, while the related current ISO 7045 specification covers M1.6–M10 and Type H or Type Z cross recesses.

Selection tip: When replacing an existing DIN 7985 screw with an ISO 7045 version, compare the head dimensions rather than relying only on the nominal thread size, as dimensional differences can occur between the two specifications.

Application of DIN7985 Pan Head Screws:

Sheet-Metal and Thin Components

The rounded pan head provides a wider bearing area than a very small low-profile head, making DIN 7985 screws practical for sheet-metal parts, covers, panels, brackets, and light mechanical components. The cross recess also allows straightforward installation with commonly available hand or power tools.

Enclosures, Covers and Access Panels

The compact rounded head works well for electrical enclosures, equipment covers, instrument panels, control boxes, and access plates, where the fastener needs to provide reliable clamping without the bulk of an external hexagonal head.

Repetitive Production Assembly

For products assembled in relatively high quantities, the cross-drive format allows fast installation with standard screwdrivers or power drivers. This makes DIN 7985 suitable for fixtures, small machines, fabricated components, and production assemblies where installation speed and easy tool access are important.

Type H and Type Z Drive Selection

DIN 7985 is available with Type H and Type Z cross recesses. The drive type can therefore be selected according to the tooling already used on the production line. For repetitive assembly, matching the screw recess with the correct driver helps maintain consistent engagement and reduces unnecessary recess damage.
