SAE J82 Machine Screws
SAE J82 specifies the mechanical and quality requirements for two grades of carbon steel machine screws used in the automotive and related industries. It covers slotted and recessed drive designs, including 82-degree flat countersunk, 82-degree oval countersunk, pan, fillister, hex, and hex washer head machine screws in sizes from No. 4 through 3/4 inch.
The dimensional requirements for these machine screws are covered by ASME B18.6.3, while SAE J82 addresses their mechanical properties and quality requirements. These two standards serve different purposes and can be used together when specifying carbon steel machine screws for applications requiring defined dimensional and mechanical characteristics.
Material Chemical Composition:
SAE J82 covers two grades of carbon steel machine screws: Grade 60M and Grade 120M. The chemical composition requirements for these grades are presented in the table below. Material selection and processing must meet the applicable requirements of the specified grade to achieve the required mechanical properties and quality.
| Grade | Material | C(min) | C(max) | P(max) | S(max) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60M | Carbon steel | - | 0.3 | 0.048 | 0.058 |
| 120M | Carbon steel (quenched and tempered) | 0.15 | 0.55 | 0.048 | 0.058 |
Mechanical Property:
SAE J82 specifies the mechanical and quality requirements for Grade 60M and Grade 120M carbon steel machine screws. The applicable mechanical requirements depend on the specified grade, screw dimensions, head style, and length. Tensile load requirements and testing methods vary according to the screw type and applicable dimensional conditions.
| Grade | Tension Strength min,(psi) | Hardness Rockwell min | Hardness Rockwell max |
| 60M | 60 000 | B70 | B100 |
| 120M | 120 000 | C25 | C35 |
Tension Load:
SAE J82 specifies tensile load requirements for machine screws according to their head style, nominal size, and length.
Hex and Hex Washer Head Machine Screws
For No. 4 and No. 5 screws, tensile testing is not required for lengths shorter than 0.50 in. Screws of these sizes measuring 0.50 in or longer must meet the specified tensile load requirements when subjected to axial tensile testing.
For sizes No. 6 through 3/4 in, tensile testing is not required when the screw length is shorter than either 0.50 in or three times the nominal diameter (3D). Screws meeting both minimum length conditions must meet the specified tensile load requirements when subjected to wedge tensile testing.
Machine Screws with Other Head Styles
For machine screws with head styles other than hex or hex washer head, tensile testing is not required for lengths shorter than 0.50 in. Screws measuring 0.50 in or longer must meet the specified tensile load requirements when subjected to axial tensile testing.
